Fourth of July Weekend: BBQ, Friends & Feeling Like Home

Updated: Jan 30

BBQ, Friends & Feeling Like Home

Nothing feels more like home than BBQ with friends! The smell of sizzling meat, the sound of laughter, and a table full of food—it makes my heart so happy.

In Korea, BBQ is not just food, it’s together time. We sit around the grill, flipping meat, wrapping it in lettuce with ssamjang, and stealing bites from each other’s plates. You never cook just for yourself—everyone shares, everyone eats!

Now in Boise, I try to bring that same feeling. Last weekend was Fourth of July weekend—a holiday I’m still getting used to, but honestly, I love any excuse for BBQ. So, I hosted a Korean-inspired BBQ night with my friends. We grilled, ate, and for a few hours, it felt like home.

The Grill: Meat, Seafood & Veggies

🔥 Samgyeopsal (Pork Belly): Crispy, juicy, and perfect with ssamjang.

🔥 Ribeye Steak: Simple, just salt and pepper—so good.

🔥 Salmon Steaks: Marinated with garlic, soy sauce, and honey.

🔥 Veggie Skewers: Grilled zucchini and radishes brushed with sesame oil. (Grilled radishes? New favorite!)

Side Dishes (Banchan!)

🥒 Spicy Cucumber Salad: Crunchy, refreshing, and perfect with BBQ.

🌶️ Kimchi: Obviously.

🍠 Crispy Potato Wedges: Not exactly Korean, but who says no to crispy potatoes?

Sauces & Wraps

🥢 Ssamjang: That perfect spicy-salty-sweet paste for wrapping meat in lettuce.

🥬 Lettuce Wraps: Fresh and crisp to balance all the smoky, grilled flavors.

We grilled everything outside, poured cold drinks, and just ate for hours. The fireworks in the background made it feel so different from home, but sitting around the table with my friends, laughing and grilling together—it felt close enough.
